He's obviously not dead; he hasn't had his first conversation with Karkat yet, and pesterchum doesn't work in dream-bubbles (and, John still has his pupils, meaning he isn't a ghost there).
How he did it is a fucking mystery, although I'd lol if he did use the fake blood capsules. I can see it now.

Although I feel Tavros' theory has some ground - and knowing Hussie, isn't even unlikely, I would like to say that John likely is dead, if only temporarily. Remember, his death has to be heroic or just, and this was neither - also, he's seen alive again.
He will likely come back due to godtier powers soon, but may get to visit his dream bubble before hand - and see his father.
